How Stress Reduction Can Achieve Permanent Weight Loss
Experts agree that there are 17 lifestyle factors which people need to investigate and attend to in order to achieve permanent weight loss. At the top of the list is our stress levels.
The big lie about weight loss, which diet companies try to suck people into believing, is that weight loss requires dieting. In fact the opposite is true. Dieting ends up adding 6 lbs per year per dieter, and dieting fails for nearly 100% of people. No, dieting is not the answer, but lifestyle factors, including stress reduction, are in most cases the only answer you’ll need.
What is the harm done by stress? A healthy reaction to stress includes the release of a hormone called cortisol, and so far so good. But too much stress produces way too much cortisol and we experience damage to our entire body function, including our metabolic rate.
If you have persistent stress in your life, if you have an anxiety disorder or panic, or if you suffer from frequent fear or worry, then you are at risk of physical damage, and you most likely have a reduced matabolic rate. The best thing you can possibly do is to seek help to eliminate excess stress.
However it should never be simply presumed that if someone has all the symptoms of anxiety, that they have an anxiety disorder! This is because there are several physical illnesses which also produce those symptoms, and left untreated these could have tragic consequences. Always, have your symptoms thoroughly investigated by your doctor to exclude underlying pathology. (Eg thyroid disorder can produce all of the symptoms of the anxiety disorders, and yet is frequently missed.)
The bad news is that most of the treatments you’ll be recommended to nowadays are way out of date. These include CBT (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy) and medication, simply because they take so long to have any effect (and often have no benefit at all).
It’s also quite common for people to use alcohol or other drugs to try to soothe their stress or anxiety, even when they know this isn’t good for them. An effective therapist will ask questions about drug use and help you to put in place strategies that work a whole lot better!
Typically, therapies offered by qualified health practitioners are “evidence based” meaning that they have been clinically tested and therefore objectively evaluated. You will notice that it’s rare to read client testimonials for these therapies, not only because it would be unethical to ask for them, but because the research speaks for itself.
Testimonials do not constitute proof. For example almost everyone can point to someone whom they’ve heard stopped smoking through using hypnosis. However all studies show that hypnosis works for less than 1% of people. This miserable success rate, no better than trying to stop cold turkey, doesn’t stop the snake oil merchants from putting up dozens of testimonials asserting that hypnosis cures smoking.
The problem is that “placebo effect” (positive benefit arising merely out of the belief that the “treatment” will work) is at work in every case, so that there will always be people who improve, but they may be very few amongst many. The placebo effect is at work in clinical trials also, but in properly-designed trials this is taken into account in order to more properly judge the effectiveness of the treatment.
The most modern and effective treatment for anxiety today is called Brief, Multi-Sensory Activation (BMSA). The reason it’s so effective is that it “de-links” the stress response from whatever thought or situation used to cause it.
For example, you might have the thought of making a telephone call, and feel highly anxious about that. Utilising BMSA techniques, you could quite deliberately try to get anxious about making that call, but simply be unable to do so. Instead, you would find to your surprise that you felt quite calm.
There are huge advantages to resolving the stress in your life once and for all. Reduced stress levels improve your metabolism, but they also improve mood and sleep function, both of which in turn also improve metabolic rate. It’s an exponential impact on weight loss!
So don’t delay. Make a commitment to sorting out those stress levels right away, and enjoy all the great benefits that are waiting for you!
